Lynn's Comments: My husband had an amazing model railway set up in our home. When it became too much for the basement, he built another outside—one you could ride on! The idea for this came when we went to visit Ollie Johnston, one of the "9 old men" of Disney fame. Ollie’s ride-on railway was the inspiration for Walt Disney’s train obsession leading to his creation of the Disneyland theme park. It was also the catalyst for our outdoor railway–something our friends' and neighbours' kids will remember for the rest of their lives.

Lynn's Comments: I think this subject must come up in most households. If it's not your child who wants a motorcycle... it's your husband! I now have a couple of women friends who ride, and I have to say...I can see why it's such a romantic way to travel.

Lynn's Comments: I think worrying IS part of a parent's job. I have adult children now...and I still worry!

Lynn's Comments: When I was about 8. I snuck out late at night to meet up with a pal in the lane behind our house. My friend Joanne suggested we go to her house. Her folks were away and just her sister was home–with her boyfriend.
When we got there, the sister and boyfriend were on the couch busily "making out," so we decided to crawl behind the couch and scare them. Just as we got into position, Joanne stifled a laugh which alerted the romantic pair and they sprang into action. In seconds, they shoved the couch hard against the wall, pinning us both like roaches. We had nowhere to go. The threats of violence were serious.
We fought hard, kicked our way to the end and squeezed out of the vice just as Joanne’s parents arrived home. Everything came to a halt. We had been saved. The amorous couple had not been discovered by the authorities and we still had all our limbs and hair. It was a close call and something I wanted to bring to the strip. Great memories!

Lynn's Comments: I loved drawing Elizabeth's face in the last panel. Here I stretched the character's face into an impossible laugh. It’s not physically accurate–but it feels right. Later, when my drawing became more "realistic" I lost this wonderful elasticity.

Lynn's Comments: My mother was understanding enough to know that I wanted to be dropped off away from the mall or the theatre so my friends would think I'd come by bus or had walked to town. Now, that's a cool mom.

Lynn's Comments: There never was a "Martha" in my son's life even though readers were sure there was. I gave this character the name "Martha" for a friend whose life was in shambles at the time. It was a way of giving her a gift and she enjoyed it very much.

Lynn's Comments: I didn't have swollen feet when I was pregnant, but many of my friends did. I got letters from readers who used these strips to explain how they were feeling to folks who didn't understand.

Lynn's Comments: Elly in the last panel was fun to draw. I wanted to show exactly what it feels like to be in the 9th month of pregnancy and I think this did the trick!

Lynn's Comments: Things sure have changed since we all had land lines. I'm glad my kids were grown and on their own before the conundrum of "who gets a cell phone" was a bone of contention!

Lynn's Comments: I was royally criticized for showing Gordon having a "hormone attack." It was apparently too suggestive to be seen on the comics page.
